I agree with this--both of my parents had tempers and I learned very quickly as a child to hide at the signs of them being frustrated. You would rationalise it was the best defense, but it was really you being scared of them.
Their tempers would get the best of them and as they were brought up with corporal punishment, they didn't actually *know* any different--which honestly seems to the biggest battle. NZ has had to bring out a message on tv showing that shaking a baby in frustration is not okay. It actually chills me that there is a need for that message.
