How do I re-clip a clip that's already in my timeline?

See the little box full of tools? Play with them. They do cool things. One of the things they can do is shorten and lengthen clips, in multiple ways: by shifting your in and out points, by slowing down or speeding up the clip, etc. If you mouseover the individual tools, it should tell you the name and then you can look it up in the help.

In related news, is there any way to ZOOM IN on the timeline toolbar?

Okay, at the bottom, in the timeline window? On the left? There's a line with a triangle on it? (I think. I'm doing this from memory. *g*) Drag the triangle and you zoom in and out in the timeline.

And then. I haven't started playing with effects yet, but is there an easy way to crossfade (or set up a TIMED crossfade) between clips?

Crossfade is in your effects toolbox. You just drag it and drop it between two clips and then you can click on it and edit timing.

Or an easy way to get a clip to fade to black or fade in from black?If you leave space between clips and drop the ( ... )
