I'm a HUGE sap and generally disinclined to dwell on horrible stories.
Heh. It really depends on my mood, and the nature of the stories. Some types of horrible stories, while they certainly bother me, don't hit me in the gut on an emotional level.
But if I'm in the right mood, I'm a friggin' spigot of emotion. I had a perfect storm of confluence just the other day--I was sleep-deprived, taking meds, frustrated over work stuff, and bordering on depressed--and I was reduced very nearly to tears by a God damn LOLcat. :-}

I am with you in sapdom. I cry at movies all the time, and so am reluctant to see anything sad or with "heartwarming, plucky heroes whose desperate sacrifice saves the (blank)" in theaters. At home, it's fine, 'cause only replyhazy and the cats will see (and hear!) me crying (though the cats find it mighty distubring.) If I am depressed, it's much, much worse.
While the antics of humans upon humans generally leave me either amused or disgusted, I can't bear to hear sad/horrible stuff about animals. I end up either all teary eyed or wanting to hurt some scumbag human or both. That's why I avoid certain show on Animal Planet, like Animal Cops or Emergency Vets.
Fortunately (or unfortunately, that'll be for you to decide:), Kate will soon check into the insane asylum that is teenagerhood and have other things to think about than drowning cows.
