Yesterday was Free RPG Day.

We had originally wanted to participate in Free RPG Day by having our Mutants & Masterminds Beginner's Guide included (an introductory product for our flagship game that we specifically had printed up to take advantage of opportunities like this -- we promoted it at the ALA Midwinter show, we had it on hand at New York Read more... )

Of course it's always a bummer when something that's supposed to be fun and cool and good turns into something that makes people angry instead but at this point I'm satisfied that we did all we could do.

It doesn't surprise me in the slightest though. Gamers seem to me to be willing to bitch about stuff at the drop of the hat. Even more so if they think they're going to be getting stuff for free.

The demand doesn't surprise me much either. A large number of people, particularly in North America, complain about the "high cost" of RPGs these days (to which I usually reply: "Come live in Australia, where we pay 210% of the US cover price!"). So when they hear of free stuff, they come a runnin'.

How DARE you stand between the Entitlement Bastards and their swag?!? Honestly, I commend you for rolling with the punches and finding a way to offer something to support the cause, even if the execution turned out to be problematic. (Perhaps next year you can use opaque stickers with strong glue to obscure the UPC and send whatever the hell product you feel like. You had a great plan for a free product that would support gaming and your lines, and you should have gone ahead with it, poorly thought-out rules be damned.)

You're very welcome! I've been very gratified to see several threads where happy people did speak out about being happy with what we offered... sometimes it's only the negative feedback that makes its way to us and that can really get depressing after a while. I figure if even a small number of happy or satisfied people speak up that's a VERY good indicator.

I think it was great of you guys to offer the free PDFs as an alternative. I'm just sorry I didn't find out about it until earlier today because I would have been right there with everybody else! Hopefully next year's Free RPG Day will go more smoothly for everyone.
