the Rolling Stones' Altamont concert

My mother was there. She was also a "biker babe," riding with a group called the Spiders (iirc). She says she was stoned at the time, and was among the folks along the top edge of the bowl, so all she could see was the stage and a mini Mick Jagger bouncing around in his red cape. She said that they hadn't known about the shooting until afterward, and even then at the time, it was "a bummer."

As for why the killers were acquitted... who knows. Could be between the intimidation factor (Hell's Angels were obviously pretty big back then, even) and the police willing to give them a pass because they were supposedly doing it for security reasons. Not that it should excuse them; just speculating as to why.

The documentary had footage that shows a guy whipping out this huge knife, launching himself at the victim and stabbing him in the back, near his neck, before several other guys pile on and he's obscured from view. I just can't imagine evidence like that coming up as an acquittal today.
