As the US moves away (in theory) from some of its more draconian security measures other countries have decided to go in the other direction. Following Britain's lead, the government of New South Wales in Australia has decided to introduce reintroduce laws to allow police to search the homes of and hack into the computers of their citizens. That's the tendency of all governments. People get power, and tend toward grabbing for more. (Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.) That's why the principle of limited government is so important. The recently-ended Bush administration failed on this point, particularly (IMO) when it pushed for industry bailouts (the airlines after 9/11; the finanical groups when they started imploding near the end of 2008).

Now we have a new President who's pushing for even more money to be tossed down a hole, and more government control or ownership of industry. This doesn't bode well for the citizen's fundamental rights.

Not exactly seeing freedom on the march at the moment.
