Shore Leave (Star Trek XI)

May 31, 2009 15:36

Title: Shore Leave
Fandom: Star Trek XI
Wordcount: 558
Summary: Sulu visits his family.
Notes: Written for the Picture Challenge at Dreamwidth's random_fic_is_random, but also inspired by The Kobayashi Maru, a ST novel by Julia Ecklar. It has a fair amount of Sulu backstory in it that might not be completely canon, but has become my headcanon.

It's not a thousand, but I didn't think you'd mind. )

fanfiction, fic: star trek

Aw. ): Sulu. I wibbled a little but then smiled because it was nice. You.re so good at the melancholy tone.

I love Sulu so much. He is my favourite favourite character except for Pete Wisdom. Thanks!

I think Sulu is adorable when he's being super enthusiastic

I agree. Also when he's being rescued from certain death by Kirk and Chekov. And when he's lying around half-conscious inside a malfunctioning ship while Kirk and McCoy worry a lot.

Also, he's from the Bay Area, so he's my MidCal homeboy.

Awwwwwww. Oh my god, I love Sulu. He's such a bamf but he's so much *deeper* than a bamf. Uh, yes.

In reference to the actual fic: I love where you took this idea. Exploration, serious exploration, of minor character's back stories, especially anyone besides Chekov. I like the idea that his is different, and, like Smoke mentioned, the tone was excellent. It kind of made me feel like (this may sound crazy) a ghost, wandering beside him. It was companionably lonely.

Anyways, I liked it. A lot. And think you should continue on. With Sulu-ing. You may be so good at him because you both say "hella' and kick ass and take names.

I do not say 'hella'

I love Sulu too. He's exactly as you said.

And thanks! I admit to having lifted his backstory from one of the novels before I revised it to suit XI's needs, but a lot of what was expressed was of my own invention. The park by the bay, for instance. The ghost-ish tone is one I use a lot these days. I don't know how I do it, but I think I understand what it is I'm doing.

But yay! I am glad you did. Sulu is my favourite character, tying with Pete Wisdom for favourite overall. Which probably helps considerably - and I think we have, as you say, a lot of similarities. I will definitely continue on. I love Sulu-ing.

Sulu gen fic makes me happy :) I loved the atmosphere of this (I think I've mentioned before that creating a mood or atmosphere in a fic is something you do really well). Sulu making the cranes and talking to the statue was really wonderful.

Also this was a nice touch-
When Kirk asks him idly where he'd gone, Sulu tosses him another crane and doesn't answer directly.

(any chance of seeing some Chekov fic from you any time soon? Pretty Please?)

:D It makes me happy to write, so I would hope that would carry over. Thank you! I can't actually take credit for his crane-folding - in The Kobayashi Maru by Julia Eckler (I think that's how it's spelt) he folds a lot of Very Significant Cranes. I just appropriated the idea for this.

I imagine Sulu does that a lot. Kirk asks a stupid or too-personal question? Captain gets a crane. He probably has a whole collection by now.

(POssibly? Chekov's voice doesn't speak particularly loudly to me, but I do like his character, so we might see some Chekov gen coming to a iambickilometer near you in a bit. After I've seen more TOS.)

Really evocative and somber. Sulu needs tea and hugs. ._.
