You put the hair in the coconut (oil)

Mom went out the other day and found herself near a health food store, and she ended up buying a jar of coconut oil. She'd heard it was good for you, so what the heck. She then went on an internet search to find out all the different things a person could do with it, including cook with it and putting it directly on skin, but so far I think she's ( Read more... )

yup gotta a big ol jar of coconut oil in Kats room...it helps with diaper rash, esp a yeast causing one. Its also the first ing. in burts bees lip balm from the jar. I use it on my cracked hands (mike says I smell like popcorn!) A little does go a HUGE way, and even if it wasn't in the refridge, dep on the temp where its kept it will solidify. I think with the heat ours is now a liquid...haven't looked. I know a lady who is breast feeding and uses it to sooth her nipples (fyi mine don't have that problem)

Ahh the many uses of coconut oil...but eating straight outta the jar...ewwww...

try popping corn in it, like on the stove, real kernals in a pan w/some coconut oil...i think thats the way the movie theatres do it

It would be easier to use if it was solid like peanut butter, not solid like ice cream left in the freezer for months. I'll have to let her know she can keep it on a shelf somewhere.

I'm amused by all the different ways one can use coconut oil. It's a miracle product!

I've seen it at a couple of local health food stores, and Trader Joe's just got it in about a week ago. I had the impression that it was solid at room temperature. At least, when I tilted the jar, the contents didn't shift around.

How did you try eating it? Did you spread it on some bread, or did you just scoop out some with a spoon, and eat it that way?

And as for using it on your hair, you now have the old jingle for Brylcreem running through my head.

I'm finding most of it is solid but squishy at room temperature, with some liquid at the top. Mom's been asking me to cook with it, so I did last night (used it instead of Pam). When she asked how much I'd used, I told her I had no idea since I'd had to just scrape and scrape until I had enough to cover the pan. I then mentioned it was probably okay to be on a shelf, so it's now residing in the pantry with the other cooking oils.

When I ate it, I simply scraped off a little bit and tasted it. Gross. But I'm not super big on eating fats in the first place.

What were you making, and how did it taste? Or is the subject of a new entry that I haven't read yet?

from what i found if ur gonna cook?bake w/it u replace 1/2 of the "fats" with coco oil...ie recipe calls for 1 cup butter so use 1/2 butter, 1/2 coco oil....it also can be used straight for sauting/to greese pans and blended into smoothies...personally my jar is for hand creme & diaper rashes!
