Boo de toilette

As I was walking in the door today, I noticed my father was on the phone with someone. The house phone. This is unusual; usually if he takes or makes a call, it's on his cellphone. Mom and I are the ones that use the house phone. The way he was holding the phone was odd, too, not by his ear. I thought he was on the phone with a customer service-type person. Mom said hello to me and went, dad has a toilet problem. Oh? What happened? Then I realized the reason dad was holding the phone oddly was because he was on speakerphone. And the it dawned on me, who he was speaking to, and a familiar voice came from the speaker. Grandma.

She'd had some sort of toilet issue yesterday, and had someone out to fix it, but today it was still having an issue. My father was attempting to troubleshoot it over the phone with her. This never goes well, but it's partly because he can't see what's going on and partly because she's 89. At one point he was having her try to turn the valve under the toilet. Dad, she hasn't been able to open a jar on her own in years. Why are you having her attempt this? She was able to do something, but it didn't sound like she was able to get her toilet working. It's her only one. If that doesn't work, she'll have to go to a neighbor's or schlep on down to the Jewel. Grandma has bathroom issues and sometimes has to go *now*. Mom was like, worse comes to worse, there's always your bathtub...

She does have a call in to have someone come back, but they weren't able to come back today; it would be tomorrow. Poor grandma. This is where her living an hour away without anyone easily able to help her is a bummer, but she was very proud of herself for calling the plumber all on her own, so we'll give her credit for that. Now if only her toilet would work properly.
