All caulked up

Today's project: Remove the caulk from the kitchen counter backsplashes.

This was not something I objected to; as the house has settled, the caulk has come apart from the walls in places. It doesn't look good and we can't just paint over it. I was handed a razor blade and told not to scratch the counters. And then I cut, and cut, and cut and cut and cut; cut-cut-cut, cut-cut-cut. (Wait, sorry, thought I was part of the Itchy and Scratchy show there.) I spent over an hour on this. Dad is looking/hoping to put in a tile backsplash, so he was okay with it not being 100% perfect. It's not so much that it looks bad perpendicular to the counter, but the part behind the counter is uneven. Oh well. Because it's all under the cabinets, it's awkward to get to some spots, save for behind the sink, where there's a window and no cabinet. The one corner is going to be super fun.

Eventually I stopped, because my right index finger was unhappy with things--it's still sore hours later--and I didn't do the small counter by the fridge since we have stuff on there. I then moved on to taping stuff off. I had to skip one area under the cabinets because dad had to patch there, so I guess I'll do it tomorrow. Now the hard part was taping the cabinet by the window, one, because there's so little room between them; two, because it's fairly high up and hard to reach; and three, because I can't exactly stand in the sink to get close enough to that area. Besides, the side I worked on today had the disposal, and I could just imagine what might happen; dad had flashbacks of Fargo. Yeah, pretty much. I also had to tell him I've never seen that movie.

Mom even worked on her room a bit; it's very dusty in there, and she's wondering if that's contributing to her not feeling well. With the downstairs disrupted, it's the only room she's spending time in. Dad and I pulled back her bed so she could vacuum behind it...yeah, it's pretty bad. Even just kneeling to help dad pull the bed from the wall, my knees got all dusty. But at least she is keeping busy, too.

I forgot a funny story from the other day. This was when I was behind the fridge and he wanted me to skip using the wallpaper steamer and instead just use a sponge and water. He told me, "Use the wet water." Pause. "...As opposed to the dry water." Yes, dad. Whatever you say. (He said something similar to that today but I've forgotten it, alas.)
