And now, for my next coworker...

It's like a revolving door. Every few months, someone new comes along. And I get to train them.

Stupid natural teaching abilities.

At least I got forewarning that he was coming. He came in to meet with my boss last week Thursday, and showed up exactly on time (not good for me, because it was right when our business opened and he was stuck standing outside until we let him in, oops), and I got told he'd be here on Monday from 12-3. The goal is to have him close on Mondays to start, and according to the back building coworker, the ultimate goal is for him to take over the evening shift all four weeknights.

...Score. Maybe I'll get my Tuesday evenings back in the near future.

The pluses: He is someone we've collectively known for a long time. He's actually been a client of ours, so I already knew him by face and name. This is because he is part of my boss' Tuesday night group, which is tangentially related to the business. I was surprised when BBC told me the newest guy would do all four nights, because, uh, isn't he with you guys on Tuesdays? BBC said this came directly from the new guy's mouth last night, so okay. But anyway, owing to how we know him and that he's been a client, he has knowledge of the industry, which is huge. Like, he will know stuff that I won't and can't possibly because I simply don't have the training he does in particular areas. He'd already worked in a similar business for about a decade, though I don't know how recent that was--he did somewhat recognize the software we use, so it's a matter of getting him up to speed. And, BBC says he's a pretty chill dude. He seems low-key and knowledgeable, and he brought a pen and pad of paper but didn't take many notes, hopefully because it's not super necessary for him.

The minuses: Coming in at this point in time, where we're past the busy season and back to everything being slow, means there aren't a whole lot of opportunities to properly train him on things. Also, due to a childcare situation, he can only come on Mondays and Tuesdays during the day, and something will cause him to miss next Monday, so he'll only get in one day of training next week, which isn't great. He wondered if he should come in either several hours early on Tuesday to basically work the whole day, or perhaps come in on Wednesday to make up the hours; it's slow enough that I said, just 12-4 on Tuesday is fine. (I was only expecting him the one day this week, and then he showed up on Monday and I got told he'd be here Tuesday as well, and then he showed up a half-hour early yesterday...I'd purposely started eating my 11:45/12:00 snack early, just in case, but didn't get to finish it for a couple hours because of that. I like this guy, I think he'll be fine...but please let me have my three hours to myself so I can get some stuff done and out of the way before I have to start working with you, okay?) Oh, and so my boss does client visits on Tuesdays, and he calls constantly, so I figured, hey, perfect chance for the new guy to answer the phone...except my boss only wants to talk to *me*, so it's like, seriously, I want to help train the new guy, but I keep getting pulled to do this other stuff that only I can do, or else it's not a task someone can help with (only one person needs to send an email, for instance), so...this is not helpful. Grr.

Another reason to have him there at noon is because my young coworker can also help with training. She was jumping in with things at times, and at one point apologized to me for it, but it was fine--completely pertinent and correct. She and I are cut from the same persnickety cloth and I've trained her pretty well with certain things, so I can trust her to do many things properly, and if I'm in the middle of something, she can take over. Yay.

Sadface, she was off today, but then again it meant I was by myself so I was able to get things done, so that wasn't terrible. I stayed later than normal in order to finish some stuff up and was able to see drama mama for the first time in over a week. After last Thursday, I hadn't heard anything about her health, but obviously she is out of the hospital. She actually signed herself out early, as in against the doctor's wishes, for a couple of reasons but mainly her kids. They are in high school, and upperclassmen at that, but she didn't want to leave them alone. I can say she sent an email to the higher-ups to say she'd need to revise her schedule to Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday...but, uh, we kinda don't need her for most of those. In fact, she was never hired to work Saturday at all. I mean, the whole point of us hiring her was to work Monday through Thursday in the evenings and no other times. I don't think she gets that.

...Which is how I found myself training someone new on Monday. Funny how that works.

work, drama llama
