I got into work about 8:45 yesterday morning. Several coworkers were already there, and after a minute or two, one of them goes, there *is* a bird in here! Wait...what? Sure enough, there was a bird flying around inside. I guess he'd found evidence on his desk, lovely.
I think I've mentioned that we share a common dock for deliveries with several of our neighbors. One of them--the one the rest of us don't care for--has a habit of opening the dock garage doors for deliveries, never mind that they don't get deliveries until late in the afternoon. Sometimes they're open all day. They've been told repeatedly that the delivery drivers are perfectly capable, and okay with, opening the garage doors themselves. It's not so bad during nice weather, but in winter? Kinda sucks. Also, this lets in critters, namely birds. Our buildings are tall, like they could be warehouses, so the birds like to be up in what you could call the rafters. And this was where our little friend was.
We don't know when or how the bird got in, but the poor thing appeared to have been there a while. It was a little finch or something similar. When it would land, it would pant with its beak open--not a good sign. It was likely tired and dehydrated. Also, we have a false ceiling toward the front of our building, and the bird would fly up in there. Great. Okay, time to call upon my skills as a bird whisperer--or, better, whistler. My boss and someone else wondered, do you know what you're doing? ...No, but what can it hurt? This succeeded in not much, but oh well. At least I was trying. Also, at one point, the bird got toward the front of the building, where we have large windows. My one coworker almost had it corralled to get it out the front door, just feet away, but it freaked out and went back toward where the ceiling gets high again.
It rested up in the rafters for quite a while. I could see it from my workstation, which was very close by, so I kept an eye on it. I figured it was tired so I left it alone for a bit until someone started doing something noisy, which appeared to freak the bird out again. Eventually it made it toward the front windows. This time I decided to try and show it, hey, this part is open! This is how you leave! I was whistling at it frantically, trying to get its attention, while walking out the door and into the parking lot. But it's a bird. My own bird could be kind of dopey with this sort of thing, much less a wild one. It would get SO CLOSE, like on the light fixture closest to and across from the door, then on the emergency lights on the same wall as the door (our door essentially is in a corner). The whistling didn't necessarily do much for the bird inside, but outside, one started to respond. There! See? That's your little friend. Go toward it! Go on! By this time someone else, from the back building, had come up front and was watching and attempting to help, and the little bird ended up on the floor at one point. Oh, come on, you can hop your way out. Then, miraculously, it did end up flying outside and made its way to a bush across the parking lot. Success! Close all the doors!
The whole thing took about 45 minutes, but it's hilarious that the coworker of ours that is notorious for having animals dislike him, he spends five minutes with the bird and it leaves. Heh. Someone definitely has a reputation. He went, my dog loves me! Yes, but your relative's dog, the one that visits here most often, cannot stand you. I know this coworker is around because the little dog immediately starts barking. So...yeah. Even the animals know about you.
