Under the cut is the promo for Season 4 the CW shared today. I'm embedding the YouTube video, though it can also be found on the Vampire Diaries Facebook page and on the CW website.
Whoops, I accidentally wrote a whole meta. I underestimated my ~feelings on the matter, lol.
Because Elena's always been an object in the narrative. So many things in her life are out of her control. She's been batted around by much more powerful forces who want to use her for their own ends. She's been a pawn for basically every baddie Mystic Falls has seen; she is literally nothing more than a blood bag to Klaus and a means to an end for Esther. She's watched nearly her entire family die because of her and there was nothing she could do to stop it. Hell, she can't even choose not to make a choice - she's expected to ~choose a Salvatore, even though she explicitly states that she doesn't want to lose either one of them. She's spent three seasons battling to retain her own agency, and to have this, essentially the most important decision Elena ever has or will face - this question of her very existence and identity - to have that taken away would mean that her struggle was for nothing. (Granted, she could still kill herself as a

That's really interesting. (Disclaimer: I've also written meta on Elena being an object in the narrative.) I'm intrigued to see how it actually pans out now... whether it does fit this survival narrative, or not, and how that pans out in the rest of the season.
Another thing I'm wondering is how they're going to stop the bad guys from killing her now she's no longer useful as the doppelgänger. What's to stop Klaus throwing a temper tantrum and tearing her head off?
not to mention in the books I was told she ends up dieing because Katherine puts her in the sunlight and has her burn then she comes back with some weird angel thing and then ends up human, I dont know about anyone else but I really dont want any of that to happen

Good question. Although, really, if he's going to tear anyone's head off, it should be Rebekah's since she's the one who caused the accident. But Klaus/logic has never been a sturdy pairing.
Elena's had so many choices taken away from her that it would be awesome if her next phase would begin with her making the choice the feed, instead of being manipulated or forced into it. (Not that I'm holding out much hope for this to actually happen, tbh.)
