IMO McCoy is redeemed by Rememberance of the Daleks (i.e. the one they blew the season budget on) and Curse of Fenric. His three seasons weren't quite as bad as everyone remembers - but the cracks were seriously gaping at this point and no amount of wallpapering would cover them...

I remember liking both of those stories better than most, although probably not as much as I'm supposed to. I find the style of the McCoy era quite odd - disjointed editing and pacing, lurching shifts in tone, and key lines of dialogue thrown away to minimal effect.

To be fair, 'Image of the Fendahl' exhibits some of the same flaws, but gets away with it more often. My watching of Classic Who has revealed that it's a very mixed bag, but there are definitely times when it all just works, versus stories where -- despite everyone trying really hard -- it falls flat on its face.
