If you read the part where it says "the US economy doubled in size in this time", then that should give you a fair idea on why they did it. It's probably hard for people in other countries to imagine how fundamentally conservative our political culture is, but in economic terms it's mostly concerned with bloating the GDP first and sustainability and equal distribution of wealth second. For instance, in the same time period, the average CEO pay expanded from 30 to 40 times the average worker's salary to 344 times and over. Frankly, it should be interesting to see how the next few years play out economically, because the US economy is dragging a lot of lines behind it now.
