wait, you guys call your teachers: professor blah? at ucsc, everyone just calls the profs by their first names. though if we're asking a question, no one ever goes "allright, kirsten, so what about this?" that is pretty douchey.
I think it depends on the professor, but in my department no one's ever asked to be called by their first name. I've only heard of a professor doing that this quarter when Val mentioned one of her professors told the class he'd rather they use his first name (but then she's a film major. bit less SRS BIZNESS than my crusty department).
But it bothers me because I just think it's rude to say, "Oh, Brice probably wants this..." in a room full of undergraduates who still say, "Dr So-and-So" or "Professor BLaaah". UGH I swear it's like he's just showing off that he knows their first names. Well, so does every other TA, asshole, you're not special.
lol, ucsc is becoming less hippie-fied, but its good to know we still have it in us! and seriously, i bet you that's how it started. some hippie teacher went like "allright guys this is an open environment...i'm your equal guys, ok? don't think of me as your superior..let's feel the harmony"
but yeah, i can totally see where you're coming from.
weird to think that the only person i've ever called "dr" was dr.yee, the fucking oldass mandarin teacher in high school.
p.s. BEFORE I FORGET, I WANT TO JUMP ON THE POSTCARD BANDWAGON TOO!!! my summer address is 133 Calvin Place, Santa Cruz CA 95060. i will make sure the favor is returned if I get accepted into the paris program!
I adore Black Books - all three are just perfectly funny. Bernard behaves how we all wish we could behave! Dylan Moran was in town earlier this year doing concerts but I couldn't go - would have been great! I've seen a DVD of his stand up and he's Bernard =)
