Making a conscious effort to sit with some gratitude this morning, because I've got some bad energy following me around this morning.  It's that time in the semester when the students have gotten to know me a bit, and I start to see which ones I've connected with, which ones don't give a fuck and which ones have written me off ( Read more... )

I sat in a class with that whisper/giggle/rustle behind me.
It was annoying.
It was distracting.
Finally, the guy next to me stood up, said "excuse me" to the prof, turned to the girls and said "we are not here to hear all about your sex life, so either take it outside or shut up"
Then he apologized to the prof and sat down.
If these guys are doing anything beyond the silent eye-rolling, you are doing the rest of your students a favor by booting them out of the classroom. Not everybody has the cojones to do what my guy-next-door did, but most students would like to!

That's and awesome story! Point taken. I do know I have enough cause to confront this now (after writing about it). Still thinking of the smoothest approach, but I expect to take a stand of some sort next Monday. Thank you!

I am not good at confrontation -- unless I am pushed all the way to the edge. Then I get dangerous. Reason number three-million-and-six why I am better as a math tutor than a classroom teacher.
Now, basic crowd control, I can do just fine. I am good with basic middle school "sit down and shut up" type scenarios, but a confrontation that requires finess is not my strong point.
