I am a feminist. I have been (consciously) since age 4. I've educated myself and taken my share of Women's studies classes. I've been an activist since age 11. I had a safe house, have been trained by feminists to defend myself and  payed it forward teaching others the same techniques. I've taught women assertiveness. I' ( Read more... )

I am often incredulous as to how and why feminists seem to view female sexuality in a negative light. It is almost as if the very conditioning that we fight to deprogram ourselves of is blinding many of us to the liberating power of female sexuality unbound.........

one of the biggest issues is the silencing. Silencing that comes from individual shame (on you) mentality, or people who claim they are being triggered and it is "just too much" or the stampede of "shut up you (whore)."
Here we are in a society that currently gives voice to every group, tiniest to largest and yet, sex workers are shunned and silenced or lied about. Whether it happens from within family, friends or on community blogs, it happens and I am tired of it.
I posted this at the feministing community blog, slightly re-written to fit the PC universe over there.
Lets see if they allow it.

voice -change
your voice is just as representative - it is assumed and nothing needs to be given permission hope that makes sense - there are all kinds of Fem - it is one of those ALL simple truths that reflect our complex being understanding and oppression - Fem is often a space occupied by coming into being and we need to learn from each other as we are all in different points on that spiral - Fem has to listen with the fem and not the exclusive ear - Your voice needs to be heard as one of the ones that have come to free "you of that perception" it's not an argument it's an opportunity

Unfortunately, women in the strip industry or any other facet of the sex industry, are shunned and treated as ignorant, blamed for the continuation of the patriarchy, etc.
I posted this on a community feminist blog, feministing. Let's see if they allow it and what the response is.

I am so glad you jumped in on this one. Feminist theory is one thing, but if it ignores the validity of lived experience, it fails badly. It was exclusive of class, race and sexual orientation in the mid 20th century, and now it has to deal with inclusiveness of sexual expression. We also need to add some empiricism, since as you note the field is full of manufactured statistics.

Great post, Grace.

I am not a feminist but I believe that all women have an equal right to express themselves and be authentic human beings.

I have hoped that the movement would embrace each woman and her choices, be they forced or freely chosen. One day, maybe.

I resist the label that is placed upon a women who covertly uses her beauty to get ahead, just as much as I reject the labels placed upon those who overtly use what they have.

I do not have to agree but I must respect them.
