You really should take the computer away from me

At least until the fever goes away.

I'm afraid I snapped while reading the latest blog discussion raving about the "green" condo development at 23rd & Pine -- which is the site of that 100-year-old teardown house I was so obsessed with last year. (You might remember if you've been around that long.)

Yes, developers should promote green design. ( Read more... )

Good to speak your mind, I say. It makes me sad when old houses get torn down to build these fancy schmancy condos or town homes. Across the street from us on 22nd they are tearing down a house on one lot to put in six town homes! I wonder how in the hell they will fit it all in there. It's just sad...

We also like old houses. Almost every house we've lived in, in Seattle, has been over 80 years old. Our most loved house was at least 100.

Someone said to me the other day, "Hell, on the east coast, most people don't even consider a house a permanent structure until it's been there for a hundred years."

A single family home is about as large a home as I could ever hope to afford in Seattle... if there are any left by the time I'm in a position to own one that is.

I look at houses like other women my age look at babies. If I have any sort of biological clock it's for a home not for a child. Sadly, I think I may end up renting for the rest of my life at this rate...

I get nearly as cranky about old homes being torn down as I do about old trees being cut down. Unless they have disease or rot or something that makes them a danger - that's understandable. Clear-cutting lots just because they can? Taking out perfectly good trees that aren't hurting anything or a danger? That just sucks. Once upon a time trees lived for hundreds of years. A newly planted tree will take DECADES to replace an established tree that was removed - IF IT LIVES THAT LONG!

**sigh**
