So I have become rather addicted to the show Taboo of recently. It's a show on the people who live on the fringes of society, socially and sometimes physically. You get to hear direct interviews with the people themselves as well as psychologist and bioethicists analyzing them. It's not just subcultures. It's addicts. It's people with mental ( Read more... )

Taboo is a pretty good show, definitely a birds eye view on the different topics they present.

Well, at least from the guy who explained it, it was the idea of being stepped on. It's being down on the ground, near the feet with the smells and everything. He even hired models to use his face like a footstool and such. The foot was just a trigger that would remind him of the pleasurable degradation. There are some people who it works the other way around too, they like stepping on people or having their feet worshiped.

That sounds like an interesting show. I'm always fascinated by people who live at the extremes of society.

I find dominance and submission interesting because I have little desire to either submit or dominate. I'm a very solitary and independent person. So it makes me curious about people who do need that dynamic in their lives.

Yeah not everyone is. To be honest no one is quite sure what causes that impulse towards submission and dominance. I mean bio-psychologists will claim it is remnant from our primal days where we had to establish packs. And some will claim it is because of the way our mother's treated us when we were little. Some will claim that it is because the media will reinforce this image that it is natural that we go forward with it and get an attraction to it. Some will claim it is a remnant from patriarchy, made to make women happy in being treated secondary and that real relationships need to no such dynamic. Some will claim it is because people desire to lose control in a controlled environment. Some will claim it is for the thrill, the risk.

I could keep going on, but you get the idea. The possibilities just keep growing.

It really is. I consider myself to be well versed in subcultures and fringe things, but sometimes I hear of traditions that I had no clue existed.
