There is a Tool...sitting on the edge of the birthing box with her feet dangling towards the soft blankets spread beneath. Fr all her perching though, it's still to...picturesque...poised, perfect.

Her calm, masklike gaze is on thesmall creatures below her toes...

"I do not understand"

Always the safest answer.

"I want you to have one of those puppies."

She says quietly,

"If you do not want one, that is fine. Otherwise, you have to pick one of them. And name it."

She as never had a pet.

That she remembers.

The very concept isn't one that applies to small, furred creatures. It's a label applied to herself.

"Why Mistress?"

It seems cruel to be offering the flesh of another.

"It is the ancient and beloved communion between man and dog."

She says quietly,

"Dog said to man, 'I shall love you, and protect you, and devote my life to you' and man said 'I shall love you, and take care of you, and devote my time to you'."

And with a sad look at Tool,

"I think that you need something that will love you without condition."
