My guess is that Robert might have made the "engineering mistake" of building something that does not break and is easy to comprehend and maintain because it's well-designed. That's why people love his work, and that's exactly why the boss would rather piss Robert off than rock the boat. I bet you that the "directors" are far less dispensable in the eyes of the boss, for quite the opposite reasons. Smells kind of like big company culture there...

No, I think his Boss was genuine, and Robert's work is respected. The missing piece is that I think Robert's boss doesn't really get what he said sounded like, or how much this has pissed off Robert.
