Otakon or Defcon?

They're both the same goddamn weekend this year. Which one should I go to?!

Otakon
Pros:
  • Nearly within walking distance for me.
  • Wouldn't even need a hotel room (though could be more fun to have one).
  • More people who I know would be there.
  • Possibly some good movies.
  • Video games.

las vegas, defcon, otakon

Kinda annoyed by the current generation of so-called "otaku". Why in my day we watched anime on 17th generation VHS copies straight from Japan, and we liked it. And we didn't fight over subs or dubs because we didn't have either! We just bucked up and learned fucking Japanese.

And in MY day they didn't even offer CLASSES in Japanese anywhere we could find, so we all made nice to the dude who actually knew some Japanese, and got him to do translations-on-the-fly in the club viewing room. (He also made fansubs, and sold 'em for the price of the videotapes alone.)

Yes, yes, I know that compared to some I'm a youngin' too. But I've at least been around since before they had aisles full of manga at every book store (and they were bringing over every crappy manga imaginable).

A rather tough call, but sounds like Defcon might be more interesting to try to give a shot (and more amenably adult), at least... I suppose I'm also biased by my non-love for the current hordes of screaming juvenile fangirls and for overly-large conventions. Though I'm no fan of Vegas itself, and I haven't been much of a "hacker" since my 20's (am veeeeeery out-of-date now)...

Well, I went to Defcon last year too, and had a blast. There are good reasons to go to Otakon too, but I too am somewhat turned off by the atmosphere there. It's too big...too many hordes of screaming fangirls as you said (and my god do they scream).

Defcon sounds just... more fun, you know? And since fun is the main objective here, I think that's the biggest selling point. If you can get work to pay for it, definitely go to Defcon. If not... reconsider, in light of your current financial state, I guess. But I'd still lean towards Defcon. Plus, buffets and free booze! \o/

My current financial state?

I can afford it fine either way. Though I'd have to pay Lisa's way too which is annoying.

No question: Defcon.

I'm definitely leaning that way. Especially if I can get it paid for by work; in that case there's really no question.

You do realize that putting a poll like that up is basically a poll of your LJ readers of "are you a anime nerd or a computer nerd? Only those of us who are both have a meaningful opinion ;)

That said, I voted Defcon. When choosing my hobbies, lately I've come to choose the hobbies that are more related to things that make me money.

Yeah, but regardless I think the argument for Defcon is better. At least one non-computer nerd voted for it.
