Kenny won all of our hearts. He's a beauty and a very mild temperment for a bird capable of being a stone cold killer!

Barred owl! Just like our little buddies that nest here every year! Aren't they gorgeous? And woah - a bald eagle?? Not many folks can so that they've held one of those. He must have weighed... a ridiculous amount O_O

The barred owl was especially adorable. We got to handle five different birds. There was a kestral, falcon, hawk, bald eagle, and the owl. Owls are the only ones that like to be petted, especially on their heads. Not that we were close enough acquaintances to get to do that, but it was fun watching the handlers do it. If an owl could purr...

Kenny weighs about seven pounds, so he's a small male. They tend to run seven to nine pounds. The females usually weigh between ten and twelve pounds. I'm not sure I could have held up one of the females. We were assured that Kenny has the mildest temperment of any eagle the handlers had ever dealt with. It was amazing to have him so close!

Ah he was a fairly small one then! The only time I have seen a bald eagle was on the coast of BC, we could see the eagle on the beach and it just looked so big and majestic compared to the other birds around.

I live near the Mississippi river and we have lots of eagles who camp out there during the winter to hunt fish at the locks and dams. I've seen them perched in trees and flying, but to see one so close and have him look you in the eye was really special.

I've barely been able to sit still, waiting for them to send us the photos so I could post them. Who would really believe that I got to have a bald eagle standing on my fist without them!

Once in a lifetime.

Maybe twice, if I go again.

Or three times...
