Cost of College

Lo, those many years ago when I went to college, it cost me about $1200 for two semesters. We're talking the early seventies and I chose the least expensive four year college in my state. And because of how many students have defaulted on their loans, the federal government now caps how much freshman, sophomores, and juniors/seniors can take out for themselves. So a significant portion is left to the "family" contribution, and if you don't have the money, or your family doesn't have the money, you're screwed - or you take out a ridiculous private loan with high interest, on top of the federal loans.

The system is really f****d.

If only the wealthy are going to be able to afford a college education, we could be a third world country in just two generations.

I was reading that in Illinois, university instructors can take retirement at 55 (assuming they have 20 years in), which is absolutely ridiculous. No wonder my state is a financial mess. I'll be working until I'm seventy.

College grads won't be able to buy homes, because they'll be paying off student loans. You are right. The system is really f****d.

I know what you are talking about. I graduated from college 17 years ago had some lean years and am still paying the loans on three degrees one of them advanced.

When I was in college back in the mid-80s, I paid around $600 per semester for full-time tuition. When my husband and I went back to college in '99, tuition was over $100 *per semester hour*...about twice what I (or rather my parents) had been paying 15 years before ( ... )
