This is really an excellent characterization of Veronica. I hesitated to read it at first a little because Dick is one of my favorites, and after I watched season three, I forgave him everything for the first two seasons, (well, almost,) and I wanted the characters to forgive him, too. I'm not sure if Mac did . . . and I felt like maybe Veronica did, a little, because Dick suffered so much after Cassidy's death. I guess that's why I ended up liking this. There's no black and white, just regret and sadness on both sides, and the knowledge that other than herself, Dick is all Logan has left.

Sorry if I rambled on.

Dude, rambly comments are detailed comments! Those are the best kind of comments!

Yeah; I was trying to be kind of shades-of-grey about their situation, mostly because, well, I don't hate Dick for the things he did either. In the ending, I wouldn't say Veronica is really okay with him (hence the stuff about the gun) but she can't hate him for what happened to her.

At the risk of showing what a massive geek I am over how attached I get to the characters I love, I have to admit that I couldn't watch the third season of VM for the longest time. It sat on my shelf because I couldn't stand what happened to Cassidy, and I really hated Dick and everyone else for not realizing what Cassidy was suffering through. Then my husband finally coaxed me to watch with him, and I saw that they were going to give Dick a new dimension and give him a chance at redemption. I was glad for that, especially in light of how badly I thought the writers mishandled Cassidy at the end of things. (My opinion only, of course. It wasn't that I couldn't stand him being the bad guy, hell, my favorite characters are the bad guys, but I hated how they retconned the rape ( ... )

I was okay with the retconning of the rape. Possibly because I was spoiled for it before even watching the show (came to this of DVD two years after it ended, after all), but still. Maybe one day I'm going to do a meta on that, once I figure out what to say. And it's not really fair to be mad at the characters for not knowing what happened - hell, WE didn't know what happened.

Yeah, he's hard to hate.

I *really* love this. I was kind of thinking of this ballpark when I prompted you, but what you've written is so nuanced and so emotionally true. I don't hate Dick, but I do hold him partly responsible for Veronica's rape because it was facilitated by his capriciousness and self-involvement. I'm glad that he does too, but I'm glad also for this brilliant description of Veronica's state of mind. This is great.
