It's interesting to me how fandom has a way of bringing together people with widely disparate views and passions into one volatile community. I want to understand that better. And so, a poll:

I think that any issue that can be divided (i.e. chocolate vs. vanilla) is a source for potential conflict and drama. What I see in fandoms that causes the most wank is perhaps relationships between characters, particularly characters who are not canon-ly committed to any particular other character. Characters in general can cause wank, with people favoring one (or more) over the other.

I would have to agree with orcapotter in saying that the two things that cause the most conflict among fans people favoring one relationship over another, and people favoring one character over another. This tends to lead to character-bashing, which is almost always a source of conflict. Another source of conflict that I frequently see is between those who want to cling exclusively to canon vs. those who don't mind stretching it a bit. ;)
