This is a really interesting meme, it's kind of fun to try to think of characters that fit.

If she's "the girl", then she tends to become a romantic object in a variety of situations, not just the main romance.

That's really true. But I wonder if flirty ships can count for this meme. Because in my world, I'd put Kirk/Uhura from the new ST movie on this list. Yeah, he flirts with her initially, but I got the feeling that he did come to respect her, and that he wouldn't have said no to any sort of sexual advances ('cause he's Kirk), but that really wasn't his main goal anymore.

Well, I suppose you can bend the rules if you like, but for my purposes, I ruled out anything where one character displayed some attraction to the other, even if it wasn't very serious (I nixed Leia/Lando and Al/Winry (Fullmetal Alchemist) for this reason), and I think Kirk/Uhura would fall under that.

Well, I'm not trying to bend the rules as such--Kirk is a flirty guy, so even if it is a platonic relationship, I'm sure it's going to start with him hitting on the girl (his "Hey, how are you?" when Bones was dragging him through sickbay cracked me up. OH KIRK). But, and I could be totally wrong, I felt that he'd stopped pursuing Uhura and just wanted her to like him enough to tell him her name.

Yeah, "bend the rules" was probably the wrong choice of words, since the rules are pretty open to interpretation anyway (as are some of Kirk's actions, as you point out). I just felt that the way I was interpreting the rules and the scenes between Kirk and Uhura, I couldn't have included them. But I promise if you post this meme and include Kirk/Uhura, I will not object. :P

I've been wracking my brains trying to even come up with ten different male/female platonic friendships. I'm sure that's a statement on media, but also a statement that I need to read more books. ;)
