Last Sunday I was in shorts. Thursday was a freak storm. Had to do with cold air going over the warm lake. Since it's so early, there were still a lot of leaves on the trees to catch the snow and create heavy weights to land on the phone lines and take them out. Thousands of homes without power.

Actually, they'd be slush or mud snow angels. The snow didn't stay long. Just long enough to weigh down the branches and take out power and phone lines.

Wow. The weather in your area sounds severe, but there's been worse. It's not like you live in Florida and the city's never experienced snow before. 8 inches is hardly "state of emergency".

The state of emergency is more because it's so early in the year that the trees are full of leaves still to catch the snow and take out power and phone lines, have large branches or whole sections of trees ball and block roadways, and such. There are thoushands of homes without power and they are looking at another week to be able to correct all the damage. Most of the snow is all melting away but the damage from the storm is the problem.
