Summary: A few late band practices can lead hyde and tetsu's friendship way downhill...but can they climb back up?

Ken stepped out of the room and closed the door behind him. He leaned up against the wooden surface, releasing a long breath of relief. Finally, their dear vocalist was asleep - peacefully. With the help of Yukihiro, Ken had gotten Hyde to drink some warm broth and sip some water. Luckily for them, tiny Hyde’s stomach held it down. The vocalist fell asleep in minutes. He still had that high fever which was very concerning. Ken silently debated whether or not they should take him to the hospital. That wouldn’t be a great idea though. Somehow the media would find out about Hyde’s sickness and that would cause more commotion and stress on Hyde which the man did not need at the moment, and then there would be the onslaught of questions and theories. Lord…damn the media. So frustrating…

But if it had to happen, Ken would rush Hyde to the hospital barefooted and in his own two arms.

The guitarist quietly stepped away from the door and entered Hyde’s living room where Yukihiro was currently occupying the edge of the couch. Even with Hyde out of the room, the drummer respected his household and was acting about like everything within was as fragile as a twig. Ken smiled lightly at Yukihiro. The drummer looked up at Ken once he entered the room and asked, “He asleep?”

Ken nodded, sitting down beside Yukihiro, yet fully leaning into the leather comfort instead of sitting on the very edge. “I hope he’ll be out for awhile,” the guitarist stated, “He needs his rest with whatever he’s got.”

“What do you think it is?” Yukihiro asked as he placed his chin upon his folded hands.

Ken shrugged. “Really bad mono?” he guessed with some sarcasm.

Yukihiro eyed him ridiculously.

Ken shrugged again. “Just guessing…”

Yukihiro stared forward again in thought. Ken watched him like he always did. His eyes looked over the drummer’s lean face, pale yet glowing skin, and dark eyes. He didn’t know why, but he had the sudden urge to touch that skin to see if it was as soft and warm as it looks.

“Tetsu should be here,” Yukihiro said suddenly, drawing Ken out of his daze. “He should be here with Hyde.”

This drummer was very serious. Nothing formal, just plain and simple - straight to the point. He was completely true too. Ken scratched something behind his ear and allowed his gaze to travel randomly throughout the room. Tetsu should be here - Yukihiro was right. He needed to be here.

Hyde needed him.

The redhead sounded completely off in their last conversation when Ken called this morning. There was no anger in the bassist’s voice like their was for the past weeks, but only…

Emptiness.

Ken could recall how alone and sad Tetsu sounded when he spoke with him. When he remembered asking about Hyde, Ken could’ve sworn something bad had happened between the two youngest members of L’Arc. Tetsu’s voice was distant, broken…and now, as Ken thought over it all, he felt a deep worry for both of his closest friends.

Ken’s eyes narrowed. The worry grew as he thought more and more on what could’ve happened between Tetsu and Hyde. Another argument - probably. But it must’ve been a seriously messed up argument to make Tetsu not visit Hyde when said-vocalist was practically bedridden and sick as can be. What the hell could’ve happened?

He had to find out.

“Ken-kun?”

Ken was pulled out of his thoughts once again by Yukihiro’s voice. The drummer was eyeing him with concern in those dark eyes, and Ken couldn’t help the small smile spread on his face. “Why are you calling me that, Yukkie?” he asked playfully, nudging the drummer in his side. “You don’t have to be so formal. We’re not that distant are we? I mean, I’ve only known you for…how many years again?”

Yukihiro chuckled lightly and nudged Ken back, “I get it, Ken-chan,“ he paused for a few moments, eyes growing slightly distant. “I’m just…”

“Observant, serious, always-in-the-moment, and a very, very concerned drummer,” Ken finished for him, point blank. Yukihiro stared at the guitarist and slowly nodded moments later. Ken smirked and sat up level with the musician, a knowing look glittered in his eyes. He placed his hand upon the small shoulder and squeezed it gently.

“Don’t worry, Yukkie. Those two are smart and will pull together. We’ve watched over them practically all our lives, so they can’t fall in the dumps now. Haido will get better, and Tetsu will be with him…”

“…and so will we,” Yukihiro finished, eyes locking onto Ken‘s. Ken smiled and squeezed the drummer’s shoulder before standing up and heading toward the door. Yukihiro’s eyes were on him the entire way. “Where are you going?” he asked.

Ken turned around and smirked. “Why, to get our dear Tet-chan back where he belongs.” And with that said, Ken opened the front door and stepped outside.

Time to find Tetsu.

~o~o~o~o~o~o~

It’s funny how something so small can cover something so big… Tetsu thought absentmindedly as he slid his fingers into the depths of the sand and lifted the tiny particles into the air. Slowly, the grains slid over of the ends of his palms or snuck between the crevices of his fingers, returning to the place where they resided seconds beforehand. He watched the tiny bits fall until there was only a small puddle of sand resting upon his palm.

“I don’t need you.”Tetsu’s hand slowly formed into a fist.

“I can take care of myself.”The remaining sand dripped back onto the ground, leaving Tetsu’s hand bare and empty…just like his soul was now. He felt so hollow…so alone…so unwanted…

So unneeded…

The redhead’s eyes narrowed as more tears threatened to spill. He pounded both his fists into the innocent sand, creating holes beneath his knuckles. He remained there, leaned over with both his fists pressed tightly into the ground, and clenched his eyes tightly together. No tears will fall. What point was there in crying now? Hyde hated him. Hyde didn’t need him. Hyde was gone. Tetsu was no part of that Takarai’s life anymore…

It broke the bassist yet again.

“Kami-sama…” Tetsu mumbled, tears dripping from underneath his eyelids. “I’m acting like such a girl, crying over him like I was in love with him or something…”

“That’s because you are, buddy.”

Tetsu whirled around upon his knees and stared in surprise at the familiar person standing before him. “W-what? Ken, what’re you doing here?” he asked.

Ken gave him a stupid grin and replied, “Well, to get your ass back to where you belong. That’s why I’m here.”

“What?” Tetsu asked, confused and annoyed by Ken’s rudeness. His eyes narrowed dangerously. “I’m not going to see him, so don’t even try. He‘s made it quite clear that he doesn‘t need me anymore so--”

“Hyde is sick, Tetsuya!”

Whatever the redhead was going to say, stopped right at the edge of his lips. He stared with wide eyes at Ken who looked firmly down upon his figure, deep emotion swirling in those brown depths. Tetsu has never seen Ken with a look like the one he had right now upon his face. It was the look that caused something else, something forgotten, to stir in his chest.

Hyde was sick.

Sick.

SICK Ogawa Tetsuya!

Everything he felt earlier just blew out across the ocean. How could he have been so stupid? Here he was, mulling over losing Hyde, when he could actually lose his best friend completely. He was so blind. Hyde was sick. Hyde was sick!

Yet again, he couldn’t see it…he couldn’t see Hyde. He couldn’t understand him.

He never even tried.

“Do you see now?” Ken asked, noticing the realization dawn upon the redhead’s face. He laughed half-heartedly. “What is that hard to see, Tetsu? Hyde needs you - no matter what that midget says, he still needs you. The fever probably got to his head too much. Damn Tet, I thought you were smarter than that!”

“But…” Tetsu felt some guilt resurface. “I was so harsh to him Ken-chan…how could he still need me after what I’ve forced him through? He’s sick because of me.”

“Life has it’s rough spots, Tetsu,” Ken answered, “You and Haido have had countless arguments through your lives, and you have pulled through every one. You can’t be that blind buddy, you are in love with the squirt - no denies.”

Tetsu felt his face heat up. “Ken-chan…”

Ken kneeled before his friend and placed both his hands upon the redhead’s shoulders. He looked straight into those eyes and said, “No denies Tetsu. You need to be there with him now. He’s in really bad shape actually and needs all of us there with him…”

“What?” Tetsu gasped. Oh, does Ken regret saying that now.

Incoming: mother-hen Tetsu mode.“Have you checked his temperature? Did he break anything? What are his symptoms? Has he eaten anything? Is he sleeping? What does his skin look like? Is he hallucinating? If he has a fever, how high is it? What liquids has he drank? Has he been out of bed? Is someone there with him? You didn’t leave him alone, did you? Is he--”

“Tetsu,” Ken stopped the redhead in mid-question. Tetsu looked into Ken’s eyes, ready to listen and Ken sighed deeply.

“Stop worrying like that. Yukkie is there with him - like hell if I would leave Haido, sick, alone. Yes, he has a fever - quite a high one at that. Yes, we gave him some broth and a little water and no he hasn’t hacked it up yet. Nothing in that small body of his is broken, not even his head, and he is currently sleeping in peace in quiet. Now, anymore questions?”

“But you didn’t answer-”

“Tetsuya.”

Tetsu cringed slightly and lowered his face. Those thick red bangs fell over his eyes, shielding his emotions from the world. The playfulness left him, his emotions grabbed him, and quietly the words fell from his lips.

“I do, Ken-chan…”

Ken smiled sadly, but in relief. He pulled Tetsu into his strong embrace and held him close, allowing the redhead to burry his face into the crook of his neck. He felt watery trails hit his skin, and gently rubbed the bassist’s back soothingly. He didn’t know for how long, yet right now that did not matter. All that mattered was what Tetsu finally realized.

“I do love him…”
