I really dig how, even though Sam is always the focus here, you've effectively included Dean and Cas, and leveraged the two most important relationships he has as a way to tell us different things about Sam. I think you probably write my favorite Sam-voice in fic right now. He's never boring in your hands.

Thank you! I do love Sam. Do you know, though, I felt like this was unfinished somehow. I wasn't too happy with it. I started out with a complete other fic for the mini bang about Sam not knowing Gadreel was in him and therefore not knowing why Cas had left. Then he finds Cas and he's been renting himself out shall we say and Sam is horrified and decides to protect him. But Cas is resistant. Except it stalled badly so I kind of had to fall back on this one so I didn't drop out.

Oh, that feeling stinks. I had the thought that it could have been a longer story (lots of layers/meat to it) and the end was a touch wispy (to use a highly technical phrase) but I wasn't left feeling it wasn't a story on its own at all! And ends are generally hard. I'm glad you shared it.
I hope your original story sees the light of day at some point! The way you write Sam and Cas interaction gives me so much life and the non-mark S9 stuff is still fairly underexplored in fic i think.

I get the feeling season 9 wasn't popular with a lot of fans so that's maybe why there isn't a ton of fic on it. I loved it - tons of drama between Dean abandoning Cas after he fell, to the Gadreel arc and the battle between Cas and Metatron for the future of Heaven and the angels. The MOC was also brilliant and I loved how it segued into Dean becoming a demon. I could have had a longer S9 to be honest.
Much as I love Dean, I think Sam and Cas and their relationship needs more exploration together rather than how they both fit in around Dean. They sometimes don't seem to exist independently of him and his issues.
