Such sad stories - though what a difference you made in Sam's life!
A good friend of mine in high school had attempted suicide before I knew her. She wasn't popular and it was rumored that it was over a popular boy,so she was actually BULLIED about it, called Suicide Sarah and things like that. NO, she was depressed.
She's okay, and her daughter is now the age we were when we met. I'm grateful she's still around.
None of us knew about Katie. She had been home from college at the time and never told anyone. Another good friend of hers lived across the alley and had no clue. You always wonder what you missed.
Sam is thriving and I believe she has a family of her own. She is proof that you never know the impact you make on someone's life until after the moment has passed.
I'm so glad you were there for Sam. Isn't it amazing to comprehend what you did unwittingly that day?
I have a young friend on lj who is in a really bad family situation. She used to threaten suicide a lot. It took many months for her to realize that I and others were there for her and she didn't need to take that step. She still needs that outreach.
I also had a friend who did commit suicide. Even now we're still left with the void and anger.
This is kind of hard for me to comment on because I know from experience the awful effects that suicide has on thse left behind, but the honest truth is I've been on the other side, which is a truely fucking scary place to be, esecially when you start to come out the other side and you realise how close you were. But I can say thank you on behalf of your friend Sam. Sometimes it is the smallest of things that keep you going long enough to bother waking the next day; a friend calling for no reason, seeing the sun set, whatever. The problem is, which sadly happened for you, most people who really consider it will never talk about it at the time; never ask for help and so no-one knows or is able to help.
You should be very proud that without knowing it you are the kind of person that can save a person without trying and just by being you.
