An original piece of poetry. I am curious to what you think.
Mother
You called for me
and I came.
In the darkness
of the deep night,
the cold wind howling
against the door,
trying to break it down
no matter how much we railed against it.
I stayed by your side.
Kneeling next to you
I held your hand
I touched your back
I tried to not let you go.
I went for help
But they could not come quick enough.
Holding you in the shadows,
we did not talk like we used to,
we did joke about like as we did,
I tried to protect you
as you had so often done for me.
In the sudden stillness
I heard you say
“I love you.”
I begged,
I pleaded,
I bargained with any deity that would listen to me.
And yet,
the night became still,
as still as your tomb.
