Summary: There's a girl in Ealdor who Merlin likes and he would do anything for.
Author Notes: For the lovely
miki_hime1221 who wanted a fic where Will finds out about Merlin's magic. I hope this is okay. Kate is a character that I had way back when on a RH board (before they made the Kate character of fail I hasten to add!) you don't get too much about her here but she is very well established in my head.
This is a happier, funnier version of the same prompt because the other was a weee bit serious.
My Merlin Prompt Table It was no secret in Ealdor that Merlin had a soft spot for Kathryn Miller. She was the local seamstress and every man and his dog knew that he carried a torch for her. Including her father, who didn’t seem to carry a high opinion of Merlin, or Will or any boy in the village. Hr didn’t trust them not to make a move on his daughter. He wanted the best for her and they weren’t it.
Will and Merlin sat near the outskirts of the village near the forest when they noticed Kathryn, Kate, coming towards them on her way to the river to collect some water for her father. She took the direct path, walking straight past them with the relatively large bucket in her hand.
“Do you think she needs a hand with that?” Merlin asked Will as they sat both shred bits of grass whilst thy idly chatted.
“Do you think she needs a hand with that, Merlin?” he said with a cheeky grin on his face.
“You’re not helpful, Will.”
“Well maybe you should be, Merlin,” he said throwing the piece of grass in his hand at his friend’s head. It fell short by a good way, but Merlin still threw the blades he had in his hand at his friend, the aid of the wind helping him to hit his target, “If you fancy her so badly, Merlin, you should just tell her.”
“No way,” Merlin said deftly raising his hands.
“Then stop talking about her all the time.”
“I don’t talk about her all the time,” Merlin responded.
“Only mostly.”
“Shut up!”
Five minutes later and Kate reappeared with a full bucket in both of her hands, seemingly struggling to carry it, “Go on then,” Will urged, his voice teasing, “Give her a hand.”
“She won’t want my help.”
“You won’t know if you don’t ask,” Will rolled his eyes and started looking over towards Kate more obviously than before.
“Will, don’t stare!” Merlin hit him on the shin out of view of the girl as he too started to watch.
She noticed them both this time and waved quickly before adjusting her grip on the bucket handle. The both waved back, the tops of Merlin’s ears tinged pink. Will looked back at his best friend and laughed, “Hey Kate,” he shouted, still looking at Merlin, “Why don’t you come and sit with us for a bit?”
Merlin’s eyes bulged, “No,” he mouthed to his friend.
“Yes,” Will mouthed back.
“I would, but I need to get back,” she said as she reached them, briefly setting the bucket beside them.
“Looks heavy,” Merlin said, kicking himself for lack of something remotely cool to say.
“Is a bit.”
“Why don’t you give her a hand, Merlin. I need to get back anyway.”
“It’s okay, thanks though,” she went to pick the bucket up again and walked back towards the village, “I’ll be you later,” she smiled at Will, “Bye Merlin,” she said turning to the raven haired lad.
“See you later,” he just about managed.
Will looked at him and raised his eyebrow before promptly kicking his friend, “Go help her!”
“She doesn’t want help.”
“Yes she does! Have a taught you nothing, now go!” Merlin quickly scrambled to his feet and jogged the small gap. Will watched him gently take the bucket from both of her hands, easily holding it in one.
Behind Will one of the old tree trunks burst, shocking him. What the hell was that? he looked back towards Merlin and Kate both of which had turned back to see what the loud noise had been. Merlin looked terrified whereas Kate jut looked a little baffled.
Will was going to need to ask Merlin about that later. Right now he had to get back to make what he told the pair of them ring anywhere near the truth. Later he would corner Merlin though and he would find out just what the hell it was that just happened.
