Okay, so I'm home alone for about five days while my family goes on vacation on New York and New Jersey. Its too quiet. I come home from work and turn on all the TVs. I've been having conversations with my dog and my guinea pig. I turned on the radio in my brother's room so it was like he was here

The heater at my house makes an odd ringy noise that sometimes sounds like it will blow as well. I'd probably do what you are in the situation. And if you have to go downstairs, you might take a walkman or such with you. It'd sooth me. I dislike being alone with odd noises.
