Five things James never said and one he wants to take back.

[1] The sun kept beating down on his back, matching the pounding in his head. James looked down at the deck that he was scrubbing and the wig he was using to finish the job. Maybe he was talking to the ship, maybe to the wig, to himself, perhaps even Eliz Miss Swann, but when Captain Jack walked by, he heard a quiet whisper: "I'm sorry."
-
[2] Two days ago the sky became still and the birds stopped pinwheeling overhead, even the terns went ashore. One day ago, the sky turned a sickly apple green. This morning, they caught sight of the Pearl and instead of following her into the hurricane, Captain Norrington frowned and called out to Gillette, "Turn back."
-
[3] James had always been a private man, willing to only to share his feelings if he knew they would be appreciated and reciprocated. Maybe it was because he'd been out in the sun too long, maybe there had been one too many hits to the head, but this time before he took up his sword and pistol, he paused, smiled and boldly declared, "I love you."
-
[4] Pirates. Foul, loathsome, lust-driven pirates. Never able to settle, living only off what they could steal from others. Covetous. Perhaps it was a great stroke of cosmic irony that James had never been able to say, "I'm happy with what I have."
-
[5] He was six years old and his father was still a wealthy man. There were books, games, a few lessons, but mostly it was a time to play. Little James was known for being a hellraiser and there were even rumours that he was a thief. He never stole anything because he needed it, but just to prove that he could. He drove his poor nurse to distraction and when she tried to get him to climb out of a tree, he refused to come down unless she addressed him properly. "It's Captain, Captain James Norrington. Never forget."
-
[1] "I prefer to see it as the promise of redemption."
