Hey, I really enjoyed this new chapter. It was nice following Chris' history and I felt bad for him when Ezra accused him of not caring, especially after getting the flashback reminder of everything Chris has lost. I was glad to see Chris is going to be smart and attack with a plan. I've only seen one episode of Falling Skies but I have suspicions Conklin is a sneaky ninja traitor. Hmm.
Thank you. Not sure if Conklin will even show up in the next story, but one never knows. After reading your comment, it got me to thinking about Conklin - and how interesting it is that many writers portray him as a sneaky and nasty kind of man, when we never really saw all that much of him in the show. I don't know if that's a testament to the actor, to leave such an impression with the few episodes he filmed, or if us writers just like to jump on the few named 'bad guys' and use them over and over.
Then again, we managed to create a whole storyline of sorts for Vin and Nettie, when we never saw her again in the series, nor did we ever hear Vin speak of her. For her though, it IS a testament to the actress, and to Eric Close for the way they portrayed Nettie and Vin in that particular episode. It definitely left the viewer with the idea that they would be seeing each other more often once they'd met and gotten to know one another.
This probably means I don't read enough Mag7 fic to know but I've rarely seen Conklin used as a bad guy! I thought maybe Conklin was acting a mite shady in the fic with the way he needs to be out greeting everybody when they return. I'm sure I'm basing my opinion of him on how he's affecting Chris in the story. Which is a testament to how you're writing him. He's clearly evoking emotions in me and that's always cool.
You're totally right about Vin and Nettie. I always imagined Vin having a soft spot for her (just the way Nettie says). Maybe at first it would have been because she reminded him of his mother but he'd come to appreciate her on her own merit soon enough. She was a tough, take-no-guff, strong woman and I think Vin appreciates that in people. It certainly wasn't the soft, fluffy, weak people who were going to survive out in the west. She was awesome. The show gifts us with such strong females, both good and bad.
It's not so much as I see Conklin written as a bad guy, but rather more of a nasty person. Or could be my own wishful thinking!
I really wish that we could have seen more of Nettie. Perhaps they had been looking ahead to a third season for her (or her other acting duties kept her too busy)? It just seemed odd to see Casey in town, but not Nettie, especially since town wasn't a short walk from Nettie's place.
