Sam is still and silent beneath Rachel's hug, silent tears slipping down his cheeks. He doesn't return the hug, his hands slack in his lap. Rachel pulls back long enough to cup his cheek with one shaking hand. "Dean. I've lived in this town a long time. We were here when the dead started waking up and I've heard rumors about weird things in town since I was Annie's age."
She gives him a playful push to one shoulder. "If you think that was going to run me off, you've got another thing coming, buster. We're getting married. We're going to be happy. And you're going to teach me whatever I need to know to help keep Annie and Sam safe."
Her words sunk in, and his face lit up. "you're not going?" Pause. "I mean..."
No, no, that is what he means. "You're really not going?" In that tone, there's everything you hear in a child's tone when they open the present that was the thing they'd asked for most and can't quite believe they got it. Awe, joy, excitement, still a little surprise and a smidgen of disbelief. Just the statement being given in that tone probably sheds some light on just why it had taken him so long to open himself up to her completely, and longer still to explain what he did.
The soft disbelief in Dean’s voice and Sam’s silent tears are enough to break her heart all over again. Rachel leans close and presses a kiss to his cheek, her eyes fierce and determined. “We’re going to be a family, Dean. The four of us. You and me and Annie and Sam. We’re going to be happy and we’re going to be safe.” She pokes a finger into his chest. “And you are showing me what I need to know to help you keep us safe. You’re not alone in this, buster. We’re partners in this, you hear?”
