AU Meme

This sounds fun:

Take any one of the fandoms you know I write/rec/read AND give me a type of AU (space opera AU, pirate AU, superhero AU, etc) or another time period (Ancient Rome, Regency England, etc). I will then explain the gist of the story I would write for that AUUm, if you are unsure what fandoms I know, you can look at my tags. Or just ( Read more... )

Naruto as a modern day horror story, a la Stephen King. :-)

Okay, I'm going to try but probably fail because horror freaks me out and so I never read Stephen King ( ... )

It's interesting how the Naruto cast seems to fit in so well with this AU. Sasuke especially seems like he fits into the angsty troubled teenager mold that seems so common in (American?) shows/movies. (Which kind of makes me wonder how different characters are seen by people in different cultures...)

I like how you have Neji as a tag-a-long, both because of my love of Hinata-Neji interaction and because his obsessiveness pre-chuunin exams fits with the genre.

Neji's creepiness really does fit, doesn't it? Besides there always seems to be one asshole you end up sort of liking in these types of movies anyway and pre-chuunin-exam!Neji really does fit that. lol!

Eighties film noir, man, for Naruto ♥ Shikamaru as bored, underpaid detective is basically canon anyway.

I'm very excited for this prompt because I love Noir, but, just curious is Eighties Noir something different than regular noir or is that just the time period you want the story in too....?

haha, nope, for all intents and purposes it's the same, just more sexually charged (if that's possible) and can take place absolutely anywhere. The eighties were when noir started getting updated in all these fantastic locales--resorts, casinos, hotels not just shady gritty urban sets. I've always thought that were someone to write a Sannin AU that'd be the optimal time period /rant

Harry Potter, as a mermaid AU.

I'd make my AU maruders' era with Lily as the main character. She is a human who lives in seaside town where fishing is the main industry. Her best friend is the bookish, awkward Severus. Severus is brilliant but can be caustic and he wants to be scientist. He's the type to lecture on the important of putting aside emotions for scientific progress etc. When he becomes really busy to the point where Lily hardly gets to see him outside of class, she assumes he is working for money for college and studying for entrance exams. Around this time three boys move into town to join their small school. They are stand-offish and intriguing, but being partnered in Bio lab with one of them, James, leads to the start of a friendship and crush...or so Lily thinks until she catches James and his two friends bullying her friend Severus. She's furious and tells them off. Later, when she and Severus have regrouped to lick their proverbial wounds at an old childhood hangout, she asks what they were bullying her about. Rather than answer directly, he ( ... )

I love this. XD; It's messy and I really really like Severus' role in the story as, well, basically a mad scientist. XD XD XD And ow, poor Harry! And poor James when he comes back and finds out!

As Harry would be half-selkie, what do you think that would mean for him in terms of transforming? *curious*

(And yay for not just writing Peter out! He gets such a bad representation in fic that I'm all YAY about that!)

Peter is definitely part of the group! I feel like I had a larger role in mind for him (I decided on the story earlier and write it down later...) that involved who Snape's potential buyer was etc. but maybe in this one he will be purely good and helpful.

Also, Snape would totally be a mad scientist in a regular, non-magic world. Possibly one who sang on a blog and stalked a red-headed girl named Penny Lily the Laundromat girl.

Harry would eventually be found years later in an orphanage... (James' search is hampered by having to return to the sea for seven years etc.) and is told he can either reject his selkie magic and be a pure human or he can embrace it, but then must live by those rule (ie having to return to the sea for seven years after making contact with humans weirdness...) Only instead of Hagrid as a selkie it'd be James telling him....

Interesting! It's always neat to see what aspects of the original are kept in AUs and what are changed. Perhaps it's just the nature of series aimed at children, but despite the very cool adult characters, there is a kids "having-to-fend-for-themselves" vibe in Naruto, and it makes a lot of sense that that's one thing you decided to keep.

I like how you work in their special jutsus as the strange powers in this world. The idea of food scarcity as a complicating factor for Chouji is especially neat, since in first world countries, it's almost the opposite that causes problems.

Thank you!

Naruto, Japanese mythology AU (as in, they're bakemono or other Japanese folklore creatures).
Or if the first one doesn't qualify, psychiatric hospital AU.

Okay, so one would think Naruto would be a perfect fit for kitsune, but I'm going to put this as modern day and Naruto as an ordinary every-man..until a strange Boy called Shikamaru appears in his life. Naruto can't figure out what this dude is all about because for the longest time he won't actually *talk* to Naruto or make any indication he even realizes Naruto *exists* but at the same time the dude is everywhere. That all changes when Naruto sees his Mom and Dad when he shouldn't. As in "they've been dead for these past 18 years" shouldn't. Not that the whole being-dead thing seems to have dapened their spirts any! They chatter to him about his life and his destiny and that cute pinkhaired girl he should just ask out already they will want Grandkids one day...when Shikamaru shows up to try and usher them back to the world of the dead. Turns out the shadowy man is a keeper of the underworld (along with a pigheaded girl who's a spirt of a plant and a spirit of a butterfly who takes on an unlikely human form). Naruto, Shikamaru ( ... )

That plot sounds neat. Shikamaru never pinged me as a shinigami before (well I suppose this is what he is, sort of?), but his unimpressed stare would suit that quite well ~

Damn, you're too good at this. Now I want to write my own Naruto Japanese folklore shenanigans XD

Yes, Shigami. That's the word for it! I couldn't remember... He wold be good though with his unimpressive stare and, well, he controls shadows. That seems very death-y to me for some reason....

Thanks! Who knows, maybe I'll one day get around to writing some of these....
