I'm in a pinch!

Decisions, decisions... Do you know that dreadful feeling when a choice is made more difficult by the two items being too similar? It's so much easier to pick one when the differences are obvious ( Read more... )

I purchased a Nikkon D5000 and couldn't be happier with it. I was debating between it and the Canon...

Since both are supposedly really good for their class, I doubt it's really possible to make a "wrong" decision. I'm just torturing myself here, ahaha. Thank you very much for the input! :))
One thing I'm curious about - have you actually found use for the display, or is it more like an extra gadget that you don't end up using after all?

The nice thing about the display is that you can be holding the camera at basically any angle, and still "see" what it is you are wanting to shoot. I also like that it rotates so the screen is protected when not in use. It won't get scratched or anything...

Canon has a great 3inch display, Nikon is smaller and has lower resolution.

Hi! How are you doing?! I went after my gut feeling and grabbed the Canon after all... I was a bit surprised myself, but quite happy now.

I tend to prefer Nikon cameras myself; I got a Nikon for a graduation present yeeeeaaaarrrs ago (2004) and it's been to France with me and it still works great.

*shrug*

Either camera you get is going to be a damned good camera, and the companies have different things they're particularly good at, but I throw my lot behind Nikon.

I was really undecided although many facts pointed to Nikon, and went to the store in a grumpy, nearly foul mood (or make that resignated), and after trying both cameras out for at least half an hour, my sister (who'd make a good paparazzo from the way she was snapping away) and I settled for the Canon. I can't really say why, but I couldn't get comfortable with Nikon's swiveling screen and fewer direct "function buttons" on the outside. (The alternative, i.e. a Nikon D90 with a much nicer feel, would have been too expensive for my current level of skill. Maybe it was just the model that didn't "click" with me.)

Your comment was much appreciated, although I ended up with the Canon after all, thank you!
