           Graham looked at me and gave me that “you’re weird” look for a second. I didn’t say anything, because I didn’t want him to know how big of a moron I was. I tried to figure out a solution, not really focusing on reality, spacing out, the interminable droning of the TV broke up occasionally by canned laughter and ad jingles.

            We pulled into our driveway, and it seemed kind of empty. I was used to driving in late with another car already home. Work can do that to your family life. Graham seemed kind of subdued, now. He wasn’t despairing or anything, don’t get me wrong, but he wasn’t the smiling, giggling kid from twenty minutes prior.

November is National Novel Writing Month, a sort of challenge, to see if you can write 50,000 words, a short novel, in one month, 30 days. That's equal about 2000 words a day, and a shitload of work. One good part about being in the hospital on Hallowe'en is that volunteers come around to you with a cart full of candy, and you can take whatever you want.

Whoever guesses the moral of this story first gets a piece of my candy that I can't eat.

I used to hate needles. When I was little, I’d cry and moan and scream for a good hour before I’d let anyone come near me to give me a shot or take blood. After the big surgery I was out of it for a good two or three days, and I’m not even sure if I woke up before then. But, when I did, I was in the Intensive Care Unit, hooked up to even more machines than usual, and I had a Nasogastric tube going up my nose and then down my throat to my stomach.
