Hmm. We're complete contrasts, I think. The thought of getting a song kind of terrifies me because I find lyrics are very open to interpretation. It's the same with poetry actually. That said I often listen to songs that think they would make a great basis for fics.
It always interests me how people do that. I have certain albums that will help me write but mostly because I can listen without really listening to them. The contents of the songs has little impact on what I'm writing.
I like to use music as inspiration but I think it's difficult when other people give you that music. What if you don't like the song? What if you interpret the song completely differently?
Then again, with prompt picking it's unlikely (though not impossible) that someone would pick a prompt involving a song they don't enjoy.

This is what concerns me. I know I tend to shut down the moment that someone puts a song or even a poem in front of me - I noticed as much in the two ldws competitions I took part in.
Song lyric prompts can be enjoyable. Especially if you can listen to the song and get a feel for the mood of the piece and see what direction you should go when writing. If it's just the lyrics and no way to listen to the piece then you would be floundering and it wouldn't be fun.
I think the last thing you said is the most important. Different lyrics mean different things to different people, and if you lyric doesn't fit with your interpratation of a couple/character/fandom it must be tough.

It also depends on what the lyric prompt is.
