If you watch, he smiles once Sherlock is on his way. I've interpreted it all along to mean that he knows Sherlock is lying, and quite possibly why.

Oh, this is fantastic! I really enjoyed reading this. I've always wondered what went through Lestrade's head during that aborted conversation with Sherlock about who shot the cab driver, so I'm glad that you decided to explore that. And I love how Lestrade's thoughts about John evolve over such a short period of time. And best of all is that ending, Lestrade's flat-warming gift. Excellent job, and I hope you'll write more in this fandom. :)

It wasn't until I saw the prompt that I really thought it all through, but that image of Lestrade with the folder just stuck with me. (I frequently write fics that way--around an image.)

I have to admit, it was originally going to be a mallet, but I thought hammer was a bit more reasonable.

I'm glad you liked it. I've already got another idea, it's just looooooong. :-)
