In order to enjoy the writing process, the most important thing for me to decide before I start is the mood or the tone of the story. I usually have a feeling of that before the story itself.

I think that's interesting. I'll have to consider that next time I write a short story. Usually I just go by a concept, but I may actually try your method sometime. I also like your method of reading a book with a similar theme. :)

One of my problems is that that for some reason, I find I'm most driven to write when I'm supposed to be doing other things. My theory is that it's because I'm in "work mode" - not that I'm necessarily at work, but my mind is active and I'm thinking about stuff. Whereas if I'm just reading or tinkering around, my mind is distracted and it's hard for me to snap out of it. Of course it's also hard because I don't live alone, so sometimes I'm interrupted whether I like it or not.

I sometimes write that way too, and I do think that works very well for a lot of writers, but for me, I find that I enjoy the writing more and quite often end up with a fic I'm more happy with if I know what tone I want to have in my story.

Oh yes, haha, I'm completely with you there! Having enough time to write uninterupted and really getting into it can be quite the challenge.

I can relate to the fic starting with the ending, or with a single line, as that's often how mine seem to work. And your consideration of the tone before you even start to write makes a lot of sense - I know I've said how often your writing carried a strong sense of mood and atmosphere throughout.

So what English novels have you read prior to writing fic? ;)

So sorry for the late reply, I don't know how I missed this!

It's funny - when I wrote stories way before I found fandom, with my youthful attempts at novel writing, I usually just started writing something, and the ideas would flurry all over the place, and I was a lot more wordy. I sometimes find it a bit frustrating that my writing now (after quite some time of not writing any fiction at all) is much more like putting together a puzzle, starting out with only a few pieces, and the job is slower, but hopefully there's a little more consideration to what ends up in the story.

It can be anything, really, from Jane Austen to Roddy Doyle, via Nick Hornby and, not surprisingly, J. K. Rowling :)
