Where real life and fandom collide with unexpected results

So a few days ago, me and one of my close friends were out eating ice cream in a park after school when somehow the topic of fanfiction came up. I said that while there are some good fanfictions out there, most are self-insert and bad OC's ( Read more... )

Sometimes OC's are very, very necessary and they cannot be avoided. I've seen OC's best done when they were minor characters, filling roles that no one in the canon cast can fulfill for whatever reason. In KHR, for the most part, OC's shouldn't be so necessary but I've seen fics do it and executing the OC's very well. The problem with OC's comes when the OC's start to take center-stage, or whenever OC's dominate most of the story. I often wonder, why not just write an original fic if you're going to do that? And when the OC fits herself/himself into the main cast as if s/he's been there all along, s/he might not actually be one, but I'm more often than not tempted to call, "Sue/Stu!" and move on to the next fic.

Reader/character fics... is this where you pair a canon character with the second person POV reader? Erg. No. I'm no fan. You're right; it's kind of creepy. And borderline Sueish.

It also bugs me when OC's become the hero of the series. Sometimes, it can come across as wish fulfiment. Not to say there are some good ones, however.

Thanks, it really is creepy. I didn't really know how to say exactly that to her....

OCs, if well-developed and not thrown out there just to be a love interest can be very intriguing, especially as villains or children of canon characters. Character/reader fics are kind of creepy to me, though.

I've read very good OC fics and very very bad ones. It depends on the author how the fic turns out.
Sometimes I don't mind the OC being the hero of the story, as long as the OC knows it's place and is not stronger than my favourite characters =_= those OCs tend to make fun of them or let them look like total losers (no one tops the Varia u_u).

And Reader fics creep me out x_X
I mean, how are you supposed to enjoy a story when the character's name is: [you]
It disprupts the reading flow.
And reader fics actually don't make sense, because the author decides what [you] act and think etc
What if these actions are against your opinion? Then [you] in the fic is not you anymore and what remains is a nameless doll.
sorry for the rant xD
