R.I.P. Robert Jordan

The man redefined the modern fantasy epic. Very sad.

No disrespect intended, since for the most part I enjoyed Wheel of Time (though I lamented it ever coming to an end), but in what way did he redefine anything?

I knew he was going to die before writing the next(and last) book.
I just knew it. (Well, his being diagnosed with a fatal disease a while back kind of helped to clue me in).

I loved WoT.
Fuck.

Well, "The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass..."

According to wotmania.com:

"Beyond expressions of sadness at Jordan's passing, I have no doubt the most frequent question/concern will be, "What happens to WoT?"

I talked with Jason about this. He said that Jordan has been dictating outlines and plot lines and everything else related to the final book. He used the phrase "army of writers" to talk about the people that were converting those tapes into written form.

It would appear that the final book will still be published, I'm sure details regarding that will work themselves out. So please be patient (as challenging as that might be), and for now let's focus on Jordan's life, writing, and the joy he brought to us."

I sort of figured they would find a way to get it out.
But thanks for the confirmation!

Oh also -- I stopped reading a lot of GRRM stuff when he failed to even respond to my impassioned plea that he sign a book for me to give to Disoculated for Christmas 2004. Sure he's busy, but I emailed him with the crux of what I was looking for (short keep up the writing kind of thing and a signature) followed by a page and a half of why I thought Rob should get to have this, what it would mean to him, what a great guy he is and how much he loves GRRM.

It made me respect him less that here it is FOREVER later and still not even a "sorry I don't that" reply.

I wonder if that is why I only made it a 1/4 of the way through his last book...

I bought a copy of the ASOIAF RPG from him directly when he had extra copies, and he was super nice in e-mail (signed it, wanted to make sure we got it, etc). :(

Did you make sure the email went to the right place? I know some writers are awesome to their fans (Chuck Palahniuk immediately comes to mind), but they ask that fans follow certain protocols, such as sending a letter in c/o their editor or writing at certain time windows, etc. Also, there is the chance that whatever email you sent it to is monitored/filtered by an assistant or someone who works for his editor and THEY decided it wasn't worth his time. *shrug*

From what I've heard, GRRM isn't a dick, so this sounds like what you sent didn't get to him.

Also, mailing an actual letter to a writer (usually care of his/her editor, publisher, or agent) has a better chance of getting a response.

Anyone can send an email; it takes a lot of deliberation and thought to mail a letter, and that says something to the recipient.
