When Fernando had siestas, an occurrence that happened rarely these days, it was generally only for an hour or two. However, when Fernando woke from his siesta on that day the sun was getting ready to start its descent into the horizon and most of the heat had burned off. Beside him Stevie still slept and he figured as little sleep as he had gotten the last few nights Steven had gotten less. The Scouser’s arm was draped across Fernando’s hip, his thumb just under the band of his boxers and when Fernando moved to get up the grip tightened. Fernando turned to look at Steven whose closed eyes and even breathing showed he was still asleep but his brow furrowed as even in sleep he was scared Fernando might go away. His heart hurt knowing that he had created this fear. Fernando knew he was lucky and he was grateful that Steven was as understanding as he was. With a sad smile Fernando curled in closer and placed a kiss to Steven’s temple. Steven’s forehead smoothed out and his grip loosened. He lay there with his face in the crook of Steven’s neck as the Scouser continued to sleep.

He wasn’t sure how long it was before Steven woke, he was pretty sure he dozed off a couple more times but when Steven stirred the sky was dark and the spicy scent of Paqui’s cooking wafted up to them.

“Hmm... is it mornin’?” Stevie mumbled rubbing his eyes.
“No, but I think its dinnertime.” Fernando answered with a laugh.
“I slept all day?” Stevie asked confused.
“No amor, just a long siesta.”
“Oh, right.”

Fernando smiled as the Scouser tried to place the time a slightly bewildered look on his handsome features.

“I suppose we should get up.”

Fernando nodded and leaned over to give him a kiss, Steven immediately deepened the kiss and he eagerly shifted closer sliding onto Steven’s lap and slipping his hands under his shirt. Fernando hummed in satisfaction as Stevie tugged lightly on his hair, scratching at his scalp.

“Mmm... we shouldn’t... dinner... Sergio’s mom... she’ll think I’m... defiling you...” Steven said breathily between kisses his hands still in Fernando’s hair.
“Paqui won’t mind... I want... you to defile... me...” Fernando answered smiling against Steven’s mouth.

Fernando felt Stevie chuckle as their lips moved together then his hands slid to his face and gently pushed Fernando back.

“I don’t want her thinking I flew here just to ‘ave me way with ye. Plus I’m a bit hungry meself.”
“You didn’t come here to have your way with me?” Fernando teased with a small pout.
“Oh I did but she doesn’t need to know.” Stevie countered his voice almost a growl.

Before Fernando could even moan Steven had tossed him backwards on the bed and was hovering over his body.

“I’m going to have me way with ye over and over again.” Steven growled his voice dangerously low.

Fernando couldn’t help but whimper with desire as Stevie eyed him hungrily.

“But first we’re having dinner.” Steven continued.

With a grin he jumped off the bed and straightened out his clothes. Fernando groaned and rolled over burying his face into the bed as he willed his half hard cock down. Having calmed down he got up and pulled his pants on and straightened his hair all the while bemoaning the fact that Stevie was a cock tease. Steven just laughed and promised to make it up to him.

Dinner was a happy ordeal with Paqui taking an immediate liking to Steven despite his fears. She complimented him on his Spanish and tried to help him with some pronunciation, however his Scouse was just too thick to be able to have a decent Spanish accent. As they ate both Paqui and Sergio regaled Steven with stories of Fernando’s youth much to the blonde’s horror.

“It’s payback for me mum.” Stevie pointed out which had Sergio laughing.
“I’ll tell Stevie about you Sergio and just how you got that new nose of yours.” Fernando warned his best friend.

Sergio’s eyes widened comically large while Paqui just looked on confused.

“He broke it playing football, nene. You were with him.” Paqui said looking at him concerned.

Stevie just laughed because clearly that wasn’t the real reason. Fernando however just blinked innocently and turned to offer Paqui a charming smile.

“I know, Paqui. I was just going to tell Stevie about how Sergio cried.” Fernando lied smoothly.

Paqui nodded accepting the lie as truth and turned the subject to Mari and broken noses were temporarily forgotten.

After dinner Stevie played a game of FIFA with Sergio while Fernando called his dad. Sergio let Stevie choose his team first and without hesitation he scrolled down to Liverpool F.C. selecting it and watching the familiar crest pop up.

“I should’ve guessed that one.” Sergio said as he flipped through the Spanish teams looking for the one he wanted.

Finding Real Madrid he selected it and Stevie was surprised he hadn’t chosen Atletico. When Stevie played with Fernando the Spaniard often chose Atletico Madrid.

“The Galacticos, eh?”

Sergio turned with a grin and showed Stevie his wrist which he now noticed contained a cuff bracelet with the Real Madrid crest on it.

“Blancos para siempre.”
“And yer still mates with Fernando?”

Stevie couldn’t imagine still being best mates with Jamie if the other lad supported Everton.

“Except on derby days.” Sergio said.

He added something else that Stevie didn’t catch but from the sounds of it was some comment against Atletico. Stevie just grinned and made a change in his line up before finalizing it.

“It won’t keep you from getting beat by the Reds, mate.”
“Oh, it’s on.” Sergio said with a determined grin.

The game started and Stevie was so busy punching buttons and shouting at the players on the screen that he didn’t notice Fernando come in. On screen Stevie’s central defender performed a sliding tackle to send the ball out of play and sent the Madrid striker to the ground in the process. Stevie groaned as the screen zoomed in on the ref flashing a yellow card.

“Even this game favours Real Madrid.” Fernando complained from behind him.
“It was a clear foul, Niño. Don’t take your grudges out on my team.” Sergio tossed back.
“It’s not a grudge, Sergio Ramos.”
“Then what is it? Bitterness? Jealousy?”
“As if I’d be jealous of Real Madrid. You couldn’t pay me to play for them.” Fernando scoffed.
“You need to be good to play for them.” Sergio retorted.

Steven felt like he was at a tennis match with his head whipping back and force to keep up with their verbal rallying. And like at a tennis match he wasn’t completely sure what was going on. He was pretty sure the two friends were just joking around despite the bite to the words but the rapid fire Spanish was too much for him to catch.

“Now let me get back to beating your boyfriend.” Sergio said with a laugh.
“I think you mean trying to beat me.” Stevie interjected.

The Spaniard just grinned and lined his player up to take the free kick he had been rewarded. In the end Stevie managed to slide by with a 2 - 1 victory much to Fernando’s delight. Sergio tried telling him he wasn’t allowed to gloat since he wasn’t the one playing but when Fernando retorted with a ‘my boyfriend’s better than your boyfriend’ Sergio gave it up as a helpless cause. Fernando was still gloating when the two of them went back to the guest room they were sharing.

“I hope you know he’s going to want a rematch in the morning and you’re going to have to win.” Fernando said solemnly shutting the door behind him.
“And if I don’t win?” Stevie teased.
“You’ll be sent back to Liverpool a disgrace and I’ll tell all the lads you froze up of course.” Fernando deadpanned.

Stevie rolled his eyes and headed for the bathroom to brush his teeth.

“My dad was able to get us the house we rent early so we can go over tomorrow. He and Mari will try to get down soon.” Fernando filled him in on the call.
“How’s yer dad? Is he mad?” he called back to Fernando.
“A little, mostly he’s just glad I’m ok. I think he was afraid I’d run off for good.”
“Would ye ‘ave stayed?” he asked quietly.

There was silence and Stevie thought maybe Fernando hadn’t heard him. Spitting out toothpaste he rinsed his mouth and walked back into the room. He found Fernando sitting on the bed with his knees up to his chest and arms wrapped around him. His chin rested on his knee and there was darkness in his downturned face. Quietly Stevie crossed the room to him, settling beside him and wrapping an arm around his shoulders.

“I don’t know I like to think I’d have gone back for Mari and my dad but when I was packing my bag all I was thinking was that I needed to get out of Liverpool. If you really had been cheating I don’t think I could handle knowing I might run into you. Knowing that you would be there with someone else...”
“It’s ok to admit that. It doesn’t make ye weak to recognise yer limits.”
“It’s not that I wouldn’t want you to be happy. I tried hating you and it didn’t work. I just really wanted to be why you were happy. It’s selfish I know.”
“It might be selfish but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Ye think I’d want to know it was somebody else ye shared yer secret with, somebody else ye wanted to kiss? I love ye, Fernando and I love that ye want to be the one to make me happy. I just don’t know why ye have a hard time seeing that.”

Fernando was quiet as he sat there on the bed slightly stiff in Stevie’s half embrace. The love was there but he hadn’t shaken the uncertainty and guilt letting it create a tension between them. Steven knew that they needed to talk about this or it would become a wall between them; impenetrable without causing significant destruction.

“Fer, I’m sorry ye thought I was cheating on ye. If I had thought for one second ye did I would’ve told ye about the Spanish lessons right away.”
“I know, I’m sorry for jumping to conclusions.” Fernando said brokenly.
“But why did ye? ‘Ave I ever given ye reason to doubt me before?”

Fernando shook his head.

“So why did ye assume the worst and take off?”
“I don’t know.”

Fernando’s voice was barely a whisper and Steven could feel the wall starting to form. Part of him wanted to just drop the topic and kiss him senseless but he knew that wouldn’t be healthy. Their relationship wouldn’t survive Steven going to university if they didn’t sort this out now. He could see Fernando shutting down before him and frustration built up within Steven.

“Don’t back away now, Fernando. Please talk to me. Don’t ye want this to work? Where’s the guy who told Pepe to back off? The guy who fought through exhaustion to prove himself?”

Stevie let his hands drop away in exasperation. He needed Fernando to fight for this; to fight for them.

“You want the guy who punched his friend instead of just asking what was going on? How about the boy who let himself be used because it felt better than the nothingness? The boy who ran away instead of facing his problems?” Fernando snapped, his eyes wet with tears and no longer curled in on himself.

Standing up from the bed he faced Steven with clenched hands, the tears starting to fall as he continued.

“You want me to fight for us but is it really fair? I don’t deserve you. Not after what I’ve done, who I’ve been.”

Fernando’s anger seemed to flow out of him with that last statement and Stevie saw the defeat and self-loathing in his eyes.

“That’s not who you are. They are just things you’ve done. We all make mistakes, Fernando. Don’t you remember the start of this relationship? I should’ve just asked why ye missed practice but I didn’t. It was a mistake but we talked about it and dealt with it. Yer an amazing person, Fernando. Yes ye ran away and yes ye made bad choices in the past but yer also the guy who helps his little sister with her homework. Yer the guy who stayed late after a match to work on yer shots. Yer the boy who had responsibility thrust upon him and had to grow up too fast. Sure ye found a way to escape but that didn’t stop ye from being there to pick Mari up from school and make dinner. I think all that says a lot more about ye than a few bad choices.”

Fernando was quiet for a moment and Steven feared it wasn’t enough, that he hadn’t said the right thing.

“You make too much of the whole little sister thing. Mari has always been pretty self-sufficient.” Fernando said with a hint of a smile.

Steven couldn’t help but laugh feeling the tension ease away. Fernando smiled at that and wiped away the tears that had fallen.

“Come here, ye git.” Stevie said holding his hands out.

Fernando walked over and climbed on his lap their foreheads pressing together and fingers laced.

“Promise me next time ye have any doubts you’ll talk to me?”
“I promise.” Fernando replied softly.
“And no more of this too good for me crap or I’ll be forced to be an arse so ye think I’m not so great.”

Fernando chuckled softly and tilted his head for a quick kiss.

“Promise? I’ll play for Real Madrid next time we play FIFA and cream ye.” He threatened playfully.
“Fine, on second thoughts maybe you’re not so special.”

Moving quickly before Fernando could prepare himself or even react Steven stood up the movement sending the Spaniard tumbling to the ground. He let out an undignified yelp before tangling their legs together and bringing Steven down too. Stevie captured Fernando’s smiling mouth and pressed against him firmly. Fernando held him close as their bodies moved to fit the other. They kissed slowly as if getting reacquainted with each other and Stevie could feel the love, strength and trust in the meeting of lips and tongues. In that moment he knew that they were going to be ok; things would be hard but they’d make it through together.
