Monitor Duty - Session 1

Apr 07, 2011 18:16

Last night was the first session of Justice League Beyond. Ailsa, Aaron & Raj returned to once again play Animal Woman, Robotman and Steel Shiva. Matthew rolled up The Living Statue, a silicone based lifeform who can summon other rocky creatures; Lynn took a psychic pre-gen to make Dream, a telekinetic and mind-reader; and Weeble rebranded a ( Read more... )

No comments here yet so I thought I'd just say that I enjoyed our opening session. I wasn't sure how playing with some new people would turn out, but it was fun (especially Weeble's character).

I also think the impervious toughness thing makes sense for the characters that have it. If you've got hard titanium armour, pistols really aren't much of a threat to them, so you just need to be inventive with the threats (eg an EMP would pretty much shut down by myself and Robot Man -- maybe we could work out rules for that, eg fail a save and it takes X rounds to reboot or something).

Finally, I quite like the Silver Age pace and tone. I've never been particularly keen on the woe-is-me misery of the 80s and 90s (Watchmen is good but I wouldn't want to play one of them). I've got superpowers dammit, I want to fly and blow things up, while smiling cheesily for the camera :).

On the topic of Impervious, I've discovered while researching in The Little DM's Room that I have in fact messed up last session. M&M 2E to 3E are very similar but one of the few changes is Impervious.

M&M 2E, which we played before, makes Impervious stop attacks with a power equal or less than the Impervious rank.

M&M 3E, which we played this time, makes Impervious stop attacks with a power equal or less than halfthe Impervious rank ( ... )

I totally appreciate liking reading or watching something but not wanting to play it. I don't think it'll ever go quite as dark as Watchmen for that very reason - I mean, Rorschach might be sympathetic but playing him would be bad for your mental health.

Next session you'll still be dealing with the rather Silver Age character behind the kidnapping of Sumeria 5000, but you might see some hints of more serious campaign stuff. I believe the way I described it to Ailsa earlier in the week was, "I may run the kind of session that if they were a comic or TV show would make me blub a bit." But inbetween those, Rani Rakshasi's cult will need to be stopped from ruining the Super Bowl. :-)

I did enjoy the game but agree I need a sheet I can read. I do like the tone on the whole and think that we all had fun together. :D

I did an Excel version of Dream and The Flusher last night, and I'm going to do The Living Statue as well sometime before next week. As well as being easier to read, it's easier to change since it auto-calculates out the key stuff - so if you increase your Intellect, it knows what skills to change in response to that.

I'm glad you had fun. I was a bit nervous about having a group with 50% newbies since it's harder for me to predict how it'll go - I knew what to expect from Ailsa or Raj or Jo or Dave but not so much you guys. It seemed to work alright, though. :-)
