On the way to work this morning, my car got smashed from behind while I was stopped for a school bus. @_o I'm not hurt. And although the damage looks really bad, it appears to all be superficial, not structural. I was able to drive away, but the Ford E350 SuperDuty XL that hit me had to be towed. He swerved to try to avoid me, so his left ( Read more... )

Check with Geico as to who you can take it to -- some insurance companies have a list (like health insurance), some will require an estimate before approving the repair, etc.

Yeah, they didn't mention anything like that on the phone, but since I have to wait until next week for the police report to be available ANYWAY, I figured I might as well at least start by trying to get a free estimate or two this weekend, so I'd have something concrete to take to whichever insurance company.

So what was the deal with the other driver? How exactly did he not notice you and a school bus?

I dunno. I mean, I didn't notice the school bus at first because it was on the other side of a four-lane road, but when I saw other cars stopped I figured slowing down and paying extra attention was a good idea. Apparently this van driver figured he should just keep going at top speed. I believe the speed limit there is 30, but people often go faster and I'm sure he was.

After he hit me he came over asking why I was stopped in the road with no hazard lights or anything. I said, "School bus! Hello! Of course I'm stopped, just like the cars in the right lane are stopped and oncoming cars are stopped...everyone is stopped except you!" He worriedly mumbled something about how he needed this job because he's on probation. -_-
