LOL! I'm afraid you're right, hon. I am looking for other outside socialization for the Sithling because of his current educational situation. But you know about that.
My grandmother was a CampFire leader almost til she passed away. I refuse to give a dime to the Scouts because they're discriminatory against GLBT people.
Yep - I felt that way before the thing with my beffie's son - WTF at them saying you can't be moral or a good role model for children if you're gay? Way to perpetuate the bullshit "gay pedophile" stereotype that has no basis in fact. *I was a psych minor at one point, *G*
So their snub of my beffie's son J totally sealed it. I don't know if it's a national policy or if the locals are just tools, but beffie and her hubby both offered to participate with the troupe if that would help, and no dice.
I contacted CampFire USA and mentioned my son's physical needs and all they said was "We'd love to see you, here's a schedule of events!"
That my friends, is the kind of attitude our children SHOULD be learning. :D
We have Brownies/Girl Scouts. In fact, my beffie's daughter is very active in her local Girl Scout troupe, and that's what prompted her son to ask, "Can I join too?" Only when they asked, they were rebuffed.
Yeah, I'm still pissed about it. On the bright side though, I can say that Girl Scouts do not suffer the same homophobic and exclusionary attitudes. I give them money every year quite cheerfully.
Boy Scouts refuse someone with autism? I can understand them due to lack of resources if a child could not toilet/feed themselves etc, but in those cases couldn't a carer be allowed in to help? Even when I was ten in the brownies (UK style girl scouts) we had a girl in a wheelchair who couldn't talk or walk but she was still included in activities! Do I smell compensational problems in case something went wrong? or just ignorance and fear of the lesser abled?
Awesome that you are joining Camp Fire USA, it sounds like a VERY worthy use of time!
They have a lot of legal waiver things, so I don't know if that's the issue. My beffie got the impression that even if she or her hubby attended that wasn't good enough. I think they were generally ignorant about autism and just didn't want to deal with it.
However, our Girl Scouts/Brownies do not suffer the same issues, thank goodness.
